How long does Mommy Makeover swelling last?

You are still very early in your recovery. There isn't a set amount of time for the swelling to completely resolve, every patient is different. My patients are to wait 6 full weeks before starting an exercise program. If you do too much too soon, you will get swelling, also avoid salt and when you are resting have your feet elevated. Try to be patient, and get good rest. Good luck!

Swelling is highly variable depending upon the operations performed, the magnitude of each of those, in physiologic variables in the patient. Usually by 6 to 8 weeks 75% of swelling is resolved. The final 25% may take six months to a year.

Thanks for your question. Swelling is a natural part of the healing process after surgery. For most procedures, I instruct my patients that 90-95% of surgical swelling will resolve by 6 weeks or so. The last 5--10% can take 3 months or even longer. In body contouring procedures this may barely be noticeable. In nose reshaping surgery, the last bit of swelling can still appear to be significant. 

I advise my patients to give it a good 6 months (and sometimes even a year) to allow all of the swelling to resolve after a tummy tuck. Having said that, you will notice changes every week early on and then the changes will be more subtle after 3-4 months. Continue wearing your compression garment and just give your body time to heal. Best of luck for great results!!

Hi, there.  Congratulations on your recent surgery!  It is normal to have post-operative swelling.  For most of my patients, I see the worst swelling between 1-2 weeks post-op.  At 3 weeks post-op, you are still very early in your healing process.  The majority of swelling will decrease in 6 weeks although overall contour/outcome may take up to 3-6 months to occur.  Hang in there and follow your plastic surgeon's post-operative instructions.  Good luck with your recovery.

Congratulations on having undergone the mommy makeover surgery.  Longer-term swelling after tummy tuck surgery is not uncommon; swelling may persist for many months and even up to one year after the procedure is performed. Often, patients will report that the swelling increases as their activity level increases and gets worse later on in the day. Sometimes, the use of compressive garments may be helpful to control the edema.

The tightness, swelling, numbness, itching and hardness after a surgery like you had typically persists a minimum of 8 weeks after the surgery then slowly begins to away. In my experience, daily massage of the hard areas makes the biggest difference in getting rid of it sooner rather than later. Also try staying away from salt as this can make swelling worse. It can easily take 4-6 months to see results. Your scars will also flatten and fade but usually takes 9-12 months. Be sure to keep any scheduled follow up appointments you have with your surgeons for his evaluation and advice. You appear to be healing well so far. Hope this helps. Dean Vistnes.
