Why do I have drains coming out of the butt crack?

Question

I had an extended tummy tuck, lipo, & a breast augmentation. Most patients i see or hear have pubis or side drains. I have one in the crack of my butt and it makes sitting or lying down much harder.

Hello Jenna c,Thanks for your question.The most likely answer is that after your liposuction, your surgeon felt you would retain too much tumescent fluid, so they placed a drain in the dependent area of your lower back to allow it to drain out safely and not cause a seroma, or postoperative fluid collection.I would ask your surgeon when it would be ok to remove the drain so that you could be more comfortable.Take care,Dr. Shah

Thank you for submitting your question.  Drains can cause pain with certain positions.  Drains will be removed in 3-7 days.  Discuss your drain placement with your Plastic Surgeon.

The drain placement you discussed is not the typical spot I use, but every surgeon is different and they likely were trying to hide the scar from the drain.  I use a variety of spots depending on the location so that there is little or no scarring from the drains.  Use of very small drains also minimizes the risk of poor scars.

Hi, Jenna C.  As you stated, most plastic surgeons place drains in pubic area or at the lateral end of your incision.  I am sure your plastic surgeon had his/her reason to place drain in that particular area.  You should direct your question to him/her. Best regards.

Every surgeon has their own reasons for the things they do.  I would address this concern to him for an explanation of why he decided on that drain placement.
