If I have had staph infections is plastic surgery not advisable?

Question

I’m interested in getting a breast lift w/implants. I had 2 suspicious moles removed & 2 days later 1 removal site got infected w/a staph infection despite following the after care instructions (wash & cover with Aquaphor). Sadly, this isn’t the only time I’ve had a staph infection. A couple years ago my hand eczema got staphylococcus haemolyticus. Is cosmetic surgery a bad idea? Is there something about me that makes me prone to staph? I’m 34 w/no conditions &otherwise healthy

Hello, thank you for your question. Staph infections are infections of the skin bacteria. It may put you at higher risk of infection but speak to your plastic surgeon about your history.

You may have to do some more additional checkups before surgery including preoperative nasal swabs to see if you don’t harbor the bacteria to clear you before proceeding with any surgery.

Thanks for your inquiry, your prior history of Staph infections should give you pause, meaning it is important to discuss with your surgeon the risks of infection, antibiotics that covers Staph species, and possibly even a conversation with your medical doctor.  There are techniques to reduce Staph colonization in people, best of luck.

You may be at a little higher risk, but your surgeon should provide you with antibiotics which hopefully will help prevent any infection. the night before and the day of surgery, you will be directed to shower with dial or ivory soap and avoid all hair and skin products, to which bacteria stick.
