Is it possible to wait too long between Kybella injections?

Question

I had two Kybella injections in February and April 2017. If I were to get another injection now, would it be like starting over at square one? Or will I still see results on par with what I'd see if I hadn't waited? Thanks!

Thank you for your question! You will still see results. Kybella’s active ingredient is a naturally-occurring molecule in the body, which aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into subcutaneous fat, this molecule destroys fat cells. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store fat and, if the desired look is achieved, more treatment is not required.

You will still be able to see results. Kybella is best for patients that:
1)  Do not want surgery 
2)  Are not surgical candidates 
3)  Not willing to wear a compression dressing around the face for 1 week 
4)  Patient-  The results of Kybella will take months
Kybella take 1-3 treatments every 6 weeks.  Patient will develop swelling and possible bruising after each injection that may last a few days.  The benefit of Kybella is each treatment is quick and completed in the office. However, some patients need more than one treatment to get desired results. Hope this helps.

In my opinion, there is no maximum amount of time to wait in between Kybella injections.  You should still see improvement after one treatment now after you had the 2 treatments early last year.  It will not be like starting at square one.

No, you can still have good results if you have another treatment with Kybella. Keep in mind, Kybella is good for dissolving fat under the chin, but a combination approach is needed to get the most improvement with non-invasive options. I recommend a combination approach with thermage, ultherapy, exilis. VASER liposuction in combination with ThermiRF is the best alternative for contouring the chin, if you're a candidate. Great question! Kybella is an acid which is injected in the double chin area to reduce fat. This treatment is permanent so once your body has eliminated the fat in the desired area, the body will never reproduce those fat cells. This treatment does cause an inflammatory reaction which may leave you swollen for some weeks however this also causes the skin to tighten slightly which only improves your results for a more youthful appearance. Hi there-- great question. The answer is no, you haven't waited too long. Kybella permanently kills the fat, and there is no magic timing that makes it work better. It takes months after injections for your body to eliminate the fat, so often it takes that long to decide if you need more. You can always do another treatment, any time.

Thank you for the question.  The simple answer is... NO.   While most of us have a protocol regarding the optimal time for Kybella injections and subsequent treatments, there are no hard and fast rules.  Don’t worry.  You haven’t waited too long.

That is a great question and the simple answer is no, but let me explain.  Each treatment with Kybella gives a permanent reduction in the fat.  We generally wait two months between treatments to give you a chance to critique your treatment and decide if you want another one.  My experience has been that my patients have been very pleased with the results of their Kybella treatment and most have decided to have an additional treatment(s).  I have found that most patients continue to improve for up to 6 months after each treatment. So some patients want to wait and see the “final” result from a treatment, especially if they do not have as much sub mental fat.  Other patients don’t want to “slow down “ the process of reaching their desired improvement and return at two month intervals until they are close to their final desired effect.  But you won’t lose your improvement Fromm waiting, because each treatment is permanent.

Hi 2jd, No worries about the long interval between Kybella treatments. The fat lost during treatment is permanently dissolved. Unless you gain weight rapidly and the remaining fat cells store up fat again,you should be fine. Subsequent Kybella treatment will dissolve remaining fat.All the best, Justin Harper, M.D.
