Breast Augmentation with Fibrocystic Breasts: are there any notable side effects?

I'm a 25 year old female; Height 5'6"; Weight 120 lbs. At my most recent physical I found out that I have fibrocystic breasts (my obgyn never mentioned this when I had my yearly pap) and Vasovagal syncope. I'm interested in having a breast augmentation within the next 4-5 years and would like to know if there are any notable affects witnessed in augmentation cases of women with fibrocystic breasts, etc? Thank you!

LLFOXGA.    Fibrocystic breasts should not be an issue for your future breast augmentation surgery. Depending on your age at the time of your surgery, your plastic surgeon may request a baseline mammogram because of your history. Vasovagal syncope is a common occurrence, also not one to worried about. Be certain to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. Good Luck!

Fibrocystic changes in the breast are very normal.  If you have a normal mammogram before the procedure then you can safely proceed.

Having fibrocystic breasts will not affect the outcome of your breast augmentation. This is a common condition. I would suggest placing the implants behind the muscle. Therefore, should you need a biopsy in the future, the muscle would be between the implant and your breast tissue. Good luck!

As long as the legions have been evaluated properly and are found to be benign this wouldn't hinder you from getting breast augmentation. In general, benign fibrocystic breasts are extremely common and not something to be too worried about.

Having a breast augmentation procedure is typically not a concern when one has fibrocystic breast tissue.  Depending on the patient's age and history, we may require them to have a mammogram.  The first recommendation is to choose a board certified plastic surgeon and consult with them. You may want to bring any medical records with imaging results with you.

As others have stated however, I would ensure that all "lumps and bumps" involving your breast be thoroughly evaluated and deemed benign/safe before proceeding with breast surgery of any kind. We've done countless breast augmentation operations on patients with fibrocystic breasts (this is a common condition, not really a "disease").  In my experience this does not affect the outcome materially.  Without an exam, it will not be possible to fully evaluate you and give you recommendations. Be sure to discuss your goals and concerns with your board certified plastic surgeon and consider the pros and the cons.
