Doctors found blood clots in my lungs in September of 2017. I was off the medicine and now back on it as of January. I received another CT and the blood clots are now gone but I am still on the medicine. I wanted to get a breast augmentation this summer and wants to know is it safe?
Answer: Medications to avoid prior to surgery Hello @arrion96 and thank you for your question. I normally recommend stopping all aspirin, ibuprofen containing medication, any other blood thinning medication, over the counter medication as well as alcohol or herbal supplements for 7 days prior to surgery. However in your case, since a blood clot in the lungs can be life threatening, I would recommend you continue your blood thinners for the duration of your treatment (usually several months). It would not be a good idea to stop the medication for elective surgery in your case without being cleared by your treating physician first and assess if you are a suitable candidate for surgery. Hope this helps.James Lee, MDBoard Certified Plastic SurgeonMontreal, Canada

Answer: Blood clots and breast augmentation Thank you for your question. In general we would like you to have no blood thinners in your system at the time of surgery. Digging deeper, your recent blood clot may have been life threatening and its root cause needs investigation. Surgical procedures increase the risk of developing blood clots and we would like to know why this occurred and help prevent its reccuence. Normally we would have you see a hematologist prior to surgery to help determine if these is any link to the cause and recommendations for your up coming surgery. I wish you well

Answer: Blood Thinners and Breast Augmentation Hi arrion96, It would be best that you speak with plastic surgeon regarding the current medication you are taking. This way, proper plan of action can be initiated. Blood thinners are usually stopped a few weeks before surgery to minimize the risk of bleeding but you should also respect the recommendations of your hematologist. If you are concerned, please check it with your plastic surgeon and your hematologist for reassurance and to further discuss your options. Answer: Breast augmentation and blood thinners The risk of bleeding with a breast augmentation is actually quite low. But anytime you can minimize risks for elective procedures, you should. I would suggest a conversation with your hematologist and your plastic surgeon to see if holding the blood thinner for a period of time is possible and safe. That would be the ideal scenario to optimizing your chances of a successful result with minimized risks.
