Swelling is a normal part of recovery after surgery, especially liposuction. A properly fitted and worn compression garment can minimize the amount of swelling you experience after surgery and can hasten the resolution of the swelling. Overhydration can increase the amount of swelling you experience and will prolong the time it takes for the swelling to resolve. It is not unusual for some degree of swelling to persist for months after surgery. Overactivity in the early recovery period can also result in more swelling which then takes longer to achieve your desired goals. However, if the swelling is very localized, has associated firmness of the tissues, color changes of the skin or seems to be getting worse, you may have a postoperative complication that needs to be addressed by your surgeron. You would be best served to followup with your surgeon to confirm you are making progress.Good luck with the rest of your recovery!
Swelling and bruising following liposuction is common. You will find that your swelling may fluctuate. We recommend to our patients to wear their compression garment as much as for the first 2 weeks and 12 hours a day for the last 2 weeks. Icing will also help reduce swelling and bruising. If you are concerned, I recommend contacting your surgeon so they may evaluate you and provide the best course of action.
