Chin liposuction. Do I need to wear a neck wrap for 1-2 weeks?

Thank you for this wonderful question! As you have discovered you can consult with 3 different Board Certified Plastic Surgeons and have 3 completely different treatment pathways offered to you. With regard to laser assisted liposuction to the neck and chin this treatment typically will take me a little less than 1 hour to complete. I do request my patients to wear a compressive wrap which is much like a band for the next 14 days while at home in order to help control and reduce swelling, I do not expect the wrap to be worn in public. It is possible to experience minimal bruising and discomfort following this procedure which feels much like a deep bruise. I typically will close my incisions with glue due to the small size. I always encourage my patients to schedule another consult if there are still questions as being fully informed prior to scheduling any procedure is the most important aspect of your care. A small incision is needed to place the liposuction (4mm) and the procedure takes less than 30 minutes. One or two dissolvable sutures are used to close the incision. There is minimal to no pain after surgery and most patients experience neck numbness for a few weeks... hence no pain. I ask patients to wear a jawbra for the first 24 hours and then only at night for 5 days. Hope this information is helpful.

An examination or photos of you would be needed to determine if you might be a good candidate for liposuction under your chin.  Sometimes, liposuction under the chin is combined with other procedures that tighten the skin as well.  Different surgeons may have slightly different ways of performing liposuction under the neck and they may also have different after care instructions.  When I perform solely liposuction under the neck, it typically does not take more than 30 minutes.  I do use one small stitch under the chin and I do have patients wear a neck compression wrap for 1-2 weeks.  In most cases, I would say there is not significant pain after the procedure.  If you touched the area the day after surgery, there probably would be some degree of tenderness though.  

I recommend following up with the Doctor performing your procedure about their protocols regarding compression. You may have swelling and/or tenderness, which can last 3-6 months after your procedure. To speed up healing, you can try adding hyperbaric oxygen, lymphatic massage, venus legacy or exilis radiofrequency treatments. To improve final results, we will often do a kybella and ultherapy about 4-6 weeks after neck liposuction to get more of an outcome. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

 It is important to understand that there are fatty deposits above and below the platysma muscle in the neck. Liposuction can only remove the fatty deposits above the platysma muscle. Patients will then be required to wear a head wrap for 1 to 2 days. When patients have fatty deposits removed underneath the platysma muscle, surgery is required, and then drains are left in place for 1 to 2 days without any head wraps.

Each doctor will have a different protocol for how when I went to wear compression garments.
I asked my patients to where the garment continuously for the first 48 hours with the exception of showering or going out in public places.
After that I ask patients to work 12 hours on 12 hours off.
In other words wearing it while you sleep would be sufficient.
After a week patients can continue wearing them if they find them beneficial.
I personally don't think the compression garments are all that important.
Liposuction of the chin and neck should take around 30 minutes.
The total time in the doctors office may be much longer for filling out consent forms getting the room ready, cleaning up the patient and going over discharge instructions.
It's on most of my patients they should plan on being in the office for about an hour and a half.
That is usually an ample amount of time to go through everything in a methodical process.
Liposuction of the chin and neck usually does not have much bruising or swelling and patients usually see it made improvements. The areas may feel mildly tender to touch but you should not be in pain  after the procedure.
I personally do not place any sutures.
In fact we use no needles, no scalpels and no sutures at all.
My practice is divided exclusively to body contouring.
