To make an accurate assessment regarding the outcome of a plastic surgery procedure we generally need to see a complete set of proper before and after pictures. If you don’t have before, and after pictures and ask your surgeon to forward the pictures they took. Most plastic surgeons, do a six month follow up, which is an appropriate time to take final after pictures. There are generally two variables that determine the outcome of a cosmetic surgical procedure. The first is the patient’s candidacy for the procedure in the first place in the second is the skill and experience of the provider. When outcomes are less than ideal, the problem can usually be traced back to either the patient’s candidacy, the skill of the provider or a combination of both. To understand your candidacy for the procedure we really need to see before pictures. Being bored, certified in plastic surgery, with years of experience, does not mean that somebody is mastered anyone single operation. There are major differences in outcomes, depending who you chooses your provider. I generally recommend patients have multiple in person consultations, before choosing a provider for any permanent irreversible aesthetic procedure. During each consultation, ask each provider to open up their portfolio and show you their entire collection of before, and after pictures of previous patients who had similar characteristics to your own. And experience provider should have no difficulty showing you with the before, and after pictures of at least 50 previous patients. Being shown a handful of pre-selected images, representing only the best results of a providers career is insufficient to get a clear understanding of what average results look like in the hands of each provider or how many of these procedures they’ve actually done. Do your results look like the pictures they showed you? There’s no correct number of consultations needed to find the best provider. The more consultations you have the more likely or to find the best provider for your needs. Considering the amount of variation in plastic surgery skills, I think, having five consultations seems to reasonable before having a major facial aesthetic operation. At this point you can either accept the results the way they are or consider having revision surgery. if you feel like your surgeon, didn’t have the skills to deliver the results you had hoped for then you’ll need to find someone who does. Recognize that secondary procedures are more complex more difficult and less predictable. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
