Could this be an allergic reaction after my breast augmentation a month ago? (Photos)

My plastic surgeon is hours away. I received my BA December 27th, and 5 days ago I started developing a rash around my incisions. It itches but no pain is associated with it. I was scared it may be fungal but it looks like dermatitis? I’ve tried fungal cream for two days and that hasn’t helped. Also scared a steroid cream would delay healing time. The glue came off two days ago. I am very worried about it, and I can’t get into see my PS because of the weekend. Please help.

This rash around your incisions appears to be an allergic reaction. Before applying any creams to this area, contact your plastic surgeon for further direction. If you are hours away and are not able to come in for an in-person evaluation, often you can send these photos to your surgeon for evaluation and advice. As always, continue to monitor this area for increased redness, warmth, or drainage as these can indicate infection.

It seems to most resemble an allergic skin reaction, and less like a fungal rash.  You can begin OTC Benadryl (which will help with the itching).  Don't be overly alarmed, but I do recommend contacting your plastic surgeon who should have a mechanism in place for patient contact even over the weekend.  Your plastic surgeon will be able to better direct you with your wound care.  Good luck.

Thank you for sharing your question.  It does appear that you are having an allergic reaction.  It is possible that it was from the surgical glue, or what you were using to cover your incision.  Sometimes lotions, soap/bodywash, or laundry detergent can cause a reaction like this.  I would use Benadryl as directed on the package and follow up with your Plastic Surgeon when their office opens.  Good luck.

It does look like some kind of allergic reaction.  Have you changed detergent or soap recently?  You do need to reach out to your PS though.  You may be able to send him or her these photos and he or she may be able to determine a cause based on your medical history and photos.  At the very least call and let them know what is going on.

Hi there,

I don't think this is an allergic reaction related to silicone breast implants but likely a result of a reaction to your dressings, tape or creams you may be using to massage.  It may even be a reaction to any mediation or antibiotics you are taking.

I would stop using any product on the area and consider a antihistamine orally.  Rashes usually resolve without impacting on wound healing, but I do agree with avoiding a steroid cream.

Sit tight and let things settle down. You may not identify the specific causative agent.  Your local GP is a good idea for an opinion while your surgeon is away.

Thank you for your question and photos. This does appear to be an allergic or hypersensitivity reaction. In that area it may well be due to the surgical adhesive. If that is the case and it has flaked off, you can expect it to settle down over the next several days. Be mindful of what comes in contact with the area, bra, soaps or detergents used.
