Juvederm/collagen lasting 3 years after being overfilled in lips?

I’ve read where juvederm can stimulate collagen production in the lips. I had Juvederm Ultra injected into my lips 3 years ago. My top lip was overfilled. It has gone down some, but 3 years later, my lip is still big. I know it was Juvederm that was used. I saw the syringe come out of the packaging. Everything says there’s no way it could still be in my lips 3 years later. Could this be collagen? how long does that last? My lip changes size as well which makes me think product is still in there.

Lip overfilling due to hyaluronic acid is temporary as the product dissolves. It is not possible for standard hyaluronic acid products to be in place after 3 years. The overfilled look that remains may be due to scar tissue, lymphedema, mild chronic infection due to contaminated filler, or fake product (where you go to have it done is important!). I advise you to see a board-certified plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon with significant experience.

This needs an in-person evaluation. It is not likely that this is due to your Juvederm injections. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. If this is filler, it can be reversed with hyaluronidase. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

This is difficult to answer without pictures. After 3 years, it is unlikely this is due to existing Juvederm. I recommend following up with your Doctor. I hope this helps!

Hyaluronic acids as well as trauma may contribute to a permanent increase in the size of lips. If your upper lip is too full, an injection of hyaluronidase (the enzyme that dissolves HA) would be the first option I would suggest.  When hyaluronic acid is present, the lip size will decrease immediately with just a small amount of hyaluronidase.   If the enzyme does not work, at the next visit, I would inject a steroid.  Your lip size may vary depending upon your level of hydration and the time of day.  Hyaluronic acids attract water.  Lips are usually larger in the morning after lying down all night.
