I've had trouble with bruxism since childhood. I also often clench my jaw while awake. I've had problems with TMJ and headaches on that side since my teens. Recently, I've begun to notice the asymmetry. I think this also contributes to my neck and upper back pain. I never thought there was anything I could do. Could Botox be a solution for me? I'm not sure what kind of doctor to go to, and would I have to get this done every few months? Would it affect my ability to chew food? Thank you!
Answer: Botox Solution for Masseter Hypertrophy? Botox, Dysport, Xeomin Slim Masseters From your description and photos, you would probably be a good candidate for improving bruxism and slimming your masseters with Botox, Dysport or Xeomon. How much slimming you’d get depends on whether the bulk in your jaw is primarily muscle or bone. It takes up to two weeks for the neuromodulator to work and it must be touched up every four months or so. When administered by an expert, the Botox won’t relax your jaw enough to interfere with chewing. Please find a board-certified dermatologist who’s been getting great results with masseter injections for many years, as it’s an advanced procedure.

Answer: Botox Dear TaylorInProgress,Botox can be very effective for masseter hypertrophy. Botox is generally an on off switch for muscle activity. Finding an experienced physician injector is your best bet. Most of patients see first changes after 4-7 days and the final results after 10-14 days. It depends on the amount of Botox and area where it is injected but it usually last for 3-4 months. If you are considering a treatment, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.Daniel Barrett, MD Certified, American Board of Plastic Surgery Member, American Society of Plastic Surgery Member, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Answer: Botox for masseter Hello and thank you for your question. The best advice you can receive is from an in-person consultation. If you have masseter hypertrophy, botox injections can be very effective. The effect of botox usually lasts 4-5 months. This decision should be based on a detailed discussion with equal input from both you and your surgeon. Make sure you specifically look at before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgery performed by your surgeon and evaluate their results. The most important aspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend that you seek consultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate you in person. Best wishes and good luck. Richard G. Reish, M.D. FACS Harvard-trained plastic surgeon
