Question

Hello I recently had a LBL in January and the sutures tore in the coccyx area...I know this is common however my PS assumed the wound was superficial after the debridement yesterday it’s not, I was told to change the dressings wet to dry twice a day until possibly getting approved for a wound vac...I have to return to work in two weeks and cannot wait another week, a second opinion states I sold go to a wound specialist...opinions please

Hello Practical5751, Thank you for your question regarding "how long will it take to heal after the wound vac is applied?"  Thank you for your pictures.  Everyone heal differently and different areas of the body heal at different rates. Also, if you had bariatric surgery, this surgery can influence your healing.  In most cases, dehiscence wounds in the sacral area take about two to three weeks to heal after the wound VAC is removed.  You may need the wound VAC for two to three weeks.  Most plastic surgeons would suggest you try to optimize your healing by applying the VAC, eating about 100g of protein a day, take extra Zinc, Magnesium, Vitamin C, Vitamin B complex, Arginine, Glutamine, and Probiotics.  Also, consider hyperbaric oxygen therapy. These can help to accelerate your wound healing.
You can go to a wound specialist.  However, all plastic surgeons are trained in how to manage wounds.  In fact, many wound care centers are run by plastic surgeons   However, if you feel better going to a wound care center, please go.  Good luck. There is no single answer to this query, as it depends on the size of the wound and the depth. All a VAC does is to literally 'suck' her depths and edges of the wound together. If it is very deep it will take longer to heal in. I should think an average of 2-3 weeks would suffice  - thereafter even if it has not healed fully you could get away with a simple dressing.
If you have any concerns please return to see your Plastic surgeon for advice and reassurance.
