I've considered breast augmentation many times but the thing that always stops me is the risk of having to get more surgeries in the future due to ruptures, the implant rotating (in the case of teardrops), etc; I know the risk is pretty low to begin with, but it's still a concern. Would getting a smaller size lower the risk? Are there specific sizes where the risk begins to go above or below average?
Answer: Breast Augmentation Risks In general, the risks associated with breast augmentation apply to any size implant. However, really large implants can cause more complications in terms of stretching the skin, sagging and possibly capsular contracture. Best, Dr. Nazarian

Answer: Size of Implant/Complications Hello,Thank you for your question. Most of the risks and considerations for BA surgery will apply regardless of size of implant, however with very large or heavy implants, there can be additional considerations. I recommend that you talk to your Plastic Surgeon about problems asscotiated with "large" implants if you are considering them. All the ebst

Answer: Do smaller breast implants carry the same risk There is no good evidence that smaller breast implants have less of a risk than larger implants. However, do remember that if one has insufficient skin and breast tissue to cover it an implant that is large and volume, some complications such as palpability or visible ripples may occur. Also, larger implants way more and may possibly increase future sagging more than a smaller implant would.

Answer: Do smaller implants have less risk Both small and large implants have the same risk of rupture, contracture, rotation, etc. Larger implants do carry additional risks associated with requiring revision surgery down the road (breast sagging, symmastia or "una-boob", glandular thinning, etc). That being said, you should understand that for ALL patients undergoing breast augmentation, an estimated 50% will need at least one revision operation by 10 years postoperative. In other words, there is a high chance you will need additional surgeries down the road. You can still expect a beautiful and long-lasting result but you should be prepared for possibility of additional surgeries.

Answer: Size of implants and complications A smaller size would not significantly alter the risk of rupture of an implant, but implants that are too big for your frame would increase the risk of many possible complications and your chance of needing a reoperation. While breast augmentation should not be seen as a 'one off' procedure, and you will most likely need further surgery over your lifetime bra use of the choice of having implants, the lifespan of implants is fairly long and a proper size selection, with the help of a qualified surgeon, will give you a long lasting result.
