Why am I still in pain 2 weeks after capsulectomy?

Question

I am not able to take pain medication so I am trying to get through this with Tylenol and ice. Anyone else experience this? I have burning and soreness in the breast. I had drains for 1 week. Surgeon said he had to dissect some of the capsule from chest wall. Could this be why I am still hurting?

Dear lynmosher, I'm sorry that you are have pain after your surgery. Unfortunately this is not uncommon. Capsulectomies under the muscle can cause a fair amount of pain and prolonged swelling. So long as the discomfort gets a little better day by day you should be ok. Keep eye out for redness or an abnormal amount of increased swelling, this may be a sign of infection. It isn't unusual to still have pain 2 weeks after surgery.  The pain tends to be worse in patients that had implants below the muscle and in patients that had a thicker capsule that may have been adherent to the chest wall.  It sounds like you may fall into both of these categories.  The pain should gradually decrease over the first 4-6 weeks and then you will probably only feel it if you strain. I'm sorry you are in so much pain. It sounds as though your nerves have been irritated as a result of what needed to be done during surgery.  The pain should improve slowly over time.  If it does not see your surgeon for an appointment.
