Will Glaucoma and wet Macular Degeneration prevent me from having upper eye lid surgery?

Question

I am 68, in good health, but have Glaucoma in both eyes and Macular Degeneration in my right eye. I keep the Glaucoma under control with drops and receive an injection of Avastin in my right eye every few months. Would this prevent me from safely having upper eye lid surgery? My Optometrist recommended the surgery because of my blocked field of vision. Thanks your opinion.

Hi,
blessed2bhere. As your optometrist says, upper blepharoplasty can elevate
eyelids that are partially obstructing a patient's vision. The conditions you
have don't preclude you from getting this procedure. As another specialist
said, you should first be cleared for the surgery by your ophthalmologist, who
may have concerns for other reasons. Once he approves you for the procedure,
choose an experienced oculoplastic surgeon who specializes in these types of
surgeries. Your ophthalmologist will probably recommend someone. Best wishes.

Blessed2bhere, in your case eyelid surgery would benefit you in that it should increase your superior field of vision.  As you have doubtless been told glaucoma can affect your peripheral vision, however, horizontal field decrease is experienced first.  Macular degeneration is not affected by eyelid surgery.  I operate on many patients with these conditions and hear that they have an improvement in their quality of life.  Hope this helps. I Thet is possible to perform upper eyelid surgery with glaucoma and macular degeneration, but it is a good idea to have clearance from your ophthalmologist to make sure there is no issues before undergoing elective cosmetic surgery on the eyelids.
