Liposuction on face - is it safe with a microcannula?

I would never suggest liposuction of this area given the vascularity / blood vessels and nerves in this area.  Very risky and can leave you with permanent long term complications.  Fat grafting around the area and/or fillers can be used.  If you have true fat mounds, low dose steroid injections can be used to thin the fat areas with little risk.  I suggest a formal facial aesthetic consultation.  Best, Dr. Emer.

It is wise to do your homework! Liposuction of the face with small cannulas, or as I call it, "Micro-liposuction" is safe in the hands of an experienced board certified plastic surgeon. I use the technique often, and not only the face, as it is an excellent tool for body sculpting. Best of luck!

Thanks for this question.Facial liposuction is safe if done on the right person, for the right reasons, by the right MD in the right place.Its a little fussy so please make sure that you have realistic expectations and pick a surgeon with a significant experience.

facial liposuction, just like Liposuction in general, largely depends upon the doctor. I have done facial liposuction in 100's of my patients. its easier for me to say that its a safe procedure. but that doesn't mean anything as I have no idea who you will see as your doctor and what their experiences have been over the yrs. just like any other part of the body one can get defects on the face as well. and can get injury to the underlying nerves and blood vessels.  

Liposuction of the lower face can definitely be performed but it must be done by a doctor familiar with the anatomy and the  nuances of the micro-liposuction technique. In this technique only very small cannulas are used with the precision,small amount of fat is removed. Lower face, such as jowls, are the best areas to treat. The perioral mound area is a very safe area of the face for small cannula liposuction. It is the safest area of the face to do as it lies in the triangle below here the buccal branches of the facial nerve run and lateral to the where the marginal branch of the facial nerve comes up from the neck to the lower lip.

Isolde7,Great care needs to be taken with liposuction of the face, and particularly in areas of motion of the muscles of expression (lips, mouth, eyelid region).  I generally will not consider those regions, as the risk of damage to local nerves and muscles is too great, as well as the potential for contour irregularities that should not occur. The same is true, to a lesser extent, in the cheeks, where liposuction alone will often look good at first, but 6-12 months later often leads to visible contour irregularities and potential for dimple formation. I do occasionally lightly suction the skin flaps during a facelift, as well as the area behind the nasolabial folds, and particularly the jowl and jawline and submental chin regions, where nice improvements are seen, but that can be done without introducing scar distortion, and without significant risk to nerves, muscles, and blood vessels. However, liposuction of the face as a standalone procedure should be avoided in my view because there is no way to do it without disrupting and scarring the most superficial fat layer in the face, and that is what leads to contour irregularities in any body area where liposuction is done.  I hope that this helps.
