If it’s cellulitis after my BBL how long do I have before it turns severe? (Photos)

Question

I had lipo with BBL 1 week ago. Now my hips are warm to touch, with slight redness and a persistent ache/throbbing. I had lipo to thighs, back, hips and a BBL. I’m worried I now have an infection/cellulitis. 2 days ago I had throbbing pain on my hip but it went but has since returned in one area which is also hard, pink/red and very warm. I’ve drawn a circle to monitor if it spreads and I’ve called the surgeons clinic where receptionist advised there’s no guarantee I’ll hear from PS today. If it’s cellulitis how long do I have before it turns severe? And I’ve been taking antibiotics the whole week.

The risk of infection is extremely low but perioperative antibiotics have become a standard.  There is less agreement about antibiotics for a period of time after surgery, though I still provide them for about a week.   Persistent ache/throbbing, warm, and red areas should always be evaluated by the plastic surgeon to rule out cellulitis. Dear emhell,
most plastic surgeons use antibiotics in perioperative and postoperative period in order to reduce the risk of infections.But in some cases it can occur despite antibiotics use. Most common symptoms of local infection are pain, redness, increased local temperature. I understand your concern. However, without a proper assessment it would be difficult to determine what is wrong. It is best that you visit your plastic surgeon for further assessment. Only after thorough examination you can get proper recommendations and advice.

From the photograph it seems you have a possibility of infection. You need to see your PS ASAP. meanwhile please continue with antibiotics.

infections are fairly unlikely after this procedure but they can happen. Typically the first sign of infection is pain that's worsening instead of getting better.  You need to be seen by your plastic surgeon ASAP.  Please visit your plastic surgeon. Infections if they occur typically worsen day by day and can spread rapidly.  At times even within hours.  Please get evaluated sooner rather than later.  Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
