Can I still get a rhinoplasty if I have glaucoma?

Hello, I’m a 26 year old woman who was diagnosed with glaucoma when I was a teen. I've been on a nightly eye drop medication ever since and it is currently being controlled. I’ve always wanted a rhinoplasty, but at the same time I want to take precautions due to my glaucoma. I am not sure if having work done on my nose will have an effect on my glaucoma or not. I am a little scared after I googled “rhinoplasty and blindness,” and read how blindness could be a complication of rhinoplasty.

Hello!Thank you for your question!If your glaucoma is under control then you could be a candidate for The Closed Scarless Nose Rhinoplasty. It's always important to inform your surgeon of your medical history. Although there are possible complications from undergoing a rhinoplasty (or any surgery), blindness is very very rare and you shouldn't worry too much. Dear Bella,    Rhinoplasty surgery is one of the best investment in yourself. It will increase your confidence, your self  esteem, your sense of femininity and save you a lot of concerns about what people think about your facial look.   In regard to your Glaucoma, as long as your intra ocular pressure is well maintained in the healthy range, you should not have any problems with Rhinoplasty surgery. Obviously, you will have to be cleared by your Ophthalmologist  who should make recommendation for the anesthesia drug usage..   You have to realize that not all Rhinoplasty surgery  results are the same, because experience, technical skills and aesthetic eye are critical for good outcome. So, do your due diligence carefully and choose your surgeon wisely.   Always, consult with experienced board certified plastic surgeons who operate in accredited surgery center for your safety. Your concerns are unfounded. Rhinoplasty should never cause blindness, ever. It has not interaction with glaucoma.

As long as your glaucoma is under control and your pressures are normal, there should be no problems undergoing a rhinoplasty procedure. Rhinoplasty is a difficult endeavor, so choose your surgeon wisely based on extensive experience

Let you doctor (and anesthesia provider) know all your medical history, but well managed glaucoma should not be a problem with rhinoplasty. And...be careful what you read on the internet. There is a lot of strange stuff out there. I am glad to hear that your glaucoma is well controlled. Prior to any rhinoplasty procedure, I would recommend getting clearance from your ophthalmologist, in addition to notifying your surgeon. Eye injury during rhinoplasty is extremely rare, and the risk of ocular complications depends on the specific rhinoplasty techniques used.
