How long after BA can I safely use crutches?

Question

I am scheduled for BA surgery in 2 weeks. I just found out that I will need hip labral repair surgery that will require approx 4 weeks of crutches. How long after BA can I safely use crutches?

You
can utilize your arms appropriately with weight in 2 to 3 weeks after your
breast augmentation.  Most patients will
have a little discomfort from the pectoralis motion and demands placed on it
from crutches; but it would be unlikely that you would have any negative
consequences from using crutches within a few weeks after your surgery.  Because your breast augmentation is an
elective situation, you may just go ahead and have your hip labral repair
surgery and do your breast augmentation afterwards because you will be up and
at ‘em after your breast augmentation in about one day but you will take a few
weeks after your hip surgery to really be mobilized fully and feel the full
vigor of recovery for some months requiring rehabilitation.  That is something I would maturely discuss
with you before you rushed into doing any surgery in my practice.

Thanks for that interesting question. The answer depends on a number of factors, including the approach used for your augmentation, the location of your implants, and your plastic surgeon's recommendation of course. I think your best bet is to discuss this with your plastic surgeon and closely follow his/her recommendations. Good luck.

Determine which one you need first. Sounds like the labrum tear is more important. If you decide to go ahead with the breast augmentation first, then it might require 2-3 months before you can crutch walk.

I would tell my patients to wait at least 4 weeks. I would also tell them to postpone the breast augmentation until after the hip surgery.

I would talk to your PS and advise him or her of this development.  It may be that he/she would recommend waiting for the BA until after your recovery from the hip operation.

I would suggest that you run this question by your chosen plastic surgeon who is ultimately responsible for your care and you may have his/her very specific recommendations for you. In my practice, I would likely ask that you avoid the use of crutches for at least one month after breast augmentation surgery. Best wishes for successful hip and breast surgery.

Hello.Using crutches after a BA will be difficult for about a month and maybe longer! I would be very careful, and give your BA plenty of time to heal- at least 6-8 weeks before doing the hip surgery. You just do not want to jeopardize your BA result, and a few weeks longer of healing will be better!Good Luck.
