As a cashier, how long do I need off of work for a breast augmentation?

Dear LAnnW93, Thank you for question. I usually tell my patients that they will feel like themselves in 24 hours. They should walk the first day and every day thereafter. They can go back to work in one week and work from home (if possible) after 48 hours. I restrict any strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for 3-4 weeks. While every patient is different, most patients feel ready to resume daily activities within a few days including going back to a job as a cashier. Your pain and range of motion may vary depending on the size and pocket dissection of the implant. Consult with you board certified plastic surgeon to go over the details. I hope this helps. Most likely you will need a week or less off. However, you can not lift anything greater than 10 lbs for 3 weeks. Check with your surgeon for his or her restrictions and guidelines. Best wishes!

Breast implants are medical devices implanted under the breast tissue or chest muscle to increase breast size (augmentation) or to replace breast tissue that has been removed because of cancer or trauma, or that has failed to develop properly because of a severe breast abnormality (reconstruction).

The FDA has approved implants for increasing breast size in women, for reconstruction after breast cancer surgery or trauma, and to correct developmental defects. Implants are also approved to correct or improve the result of a previous surgery.

The FDA has approved two types of breast implants: saline-filled (salt water solution) and silicone gel-filled. Both have a silicone outer shell and vary in size, shell thickness, shell surface texture, and shape (contour).

Always best to check with your surgeon on their experience and protocol. In general I advise my patients, on average, to expect 5 days to return to an office job. For patients who use their arms a lot, I recommend a minimum of 14 days. This advice is regardless of the size they chose.

Hello, thank you for your question. Many patients are concerned about their recovery time after a breast augmentation.  In general, I instruct patients to refrain from lifting overhead, or greater than 15 pounds, for 3 weeks postop.  Some patients may recover more quickly, and some may take more time. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure

Most women with a job such as yours will return to work after 5-7 days. This doesn't mean you will be pain free when you return to work, but it would be unlikely that you will still be taking narcotics at that point for pain. We also ask our breast augmentation patients to refrain from heavy lifting/strenuous exercise for 4 weeks. Best of luck to you!

Thank you for your question. Returning to work following surgery must be taken seriously and adhered to or complications can occur. Most people can return to a job that is mostly sedentaary after a week. If there is heavy lifting, greater than 5 pounds, or quite physical, I would wait 4 weeks. In my practice, patients can resume reasonable exercise at 1 month. Best to clarify with your plastic surgeon.
