Hi! I'm 25y/o with a very recessed chin which gives me a poor side profile and accentuates my double chin. I have no jaw line either. I've been debating between a Chin Implant vs Sliding Genioplasty. I ideally want to go chin implant route due to quicker recovery, but would it be sufficient to correct my weak chin? Or is my chin too recessed for an implant to make a difference? Also, would chin/neck liposuction be best paired with either surgery? Thank you!
Answer: Genioplasty You appear to be a candidate for jaw surgery. Do you have any problems sleeping? Any jaw pain or problems with your bite? If you are strictly looking for a cosmetic procedure, then I would recommend a genioplasty. Your chin is quire recessed and an implant would not be able to give you as much projection. A genioplasty would move your chin forward and down, creating more definition and bringing balance to your profile. It will also add length to your jawline while tightening the skin under your chin. Our office provides in-person and virtual consultations if you would like to discuss options further!

Answer: Chin implant The chin implant has long wings laterally which may give you more jaw definition. A chin implant is less expensive than a sliding genioplasty, more simpler to perform and is done intra-orally. Best Wishes, Gary Horndeski, M.D.

Answer: Will a chin implant be enough for my recessed chin A sliding genioplasty is performed by an oral surgeon in a hospital setting under general anesthesia with an overnight stay at the hospital, and is much more invasive. Placement of a chin implant can be performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure, which takes about 30 minutes. Regarding your neck, you have significant fat deposits both above and below the platysma muscle in your neck, which is going to require liposuction to remove the fat deposits above the muscle, and a surgical extraction of the fat deposits below the muscle, along with a platysma plasty to significantly improve your jawline. This is a neck lift procedure, which can be combined with a chin implant as well

Answer: Will a chin implant be enough for my recessed chin? Or would a sliding genioplasty be more effective? Based on the photos provided, I would recommend a sliding genioplasty. That can be paired with submental liposuction for more neck contouring. I would recommend against a chin implant given the degree your chin is recessed. Based on your occlusion (how your teeth come together), a jaw advancement (which is a bigger surgery) may even be indicated. It is best to consult with a surgeon who specializes in these procedures, and at our practice we employ state of the art virtual surgical planning as part of the design and planning process for our genioplasties to achieve noticeable yet natural results. Hope this helps!
