Early recovery after a geneoplasty is 5 to 7 days. The bone is pretty much completely healed and full strength at around 6 weeks. There is some continued healing that continues for months, however I generally counsel patients to begin Sports at around 6 weeks.
There are variables involved including the age of the patient and the amount of space between the genioplasty segment and the lower jaw. The larger the gap the longer it will take to heal. Complete bony maturation is closer to 4-6 months. That would be the earliest that a bone plate should be removed. Although with a strong bone plate you can be confident your genioplasty is stable immediately after surgery.
The 'plate' fixes the bone in position and the bone then 'fuses' during the healing phases. Generally, bone heals within a month but it is best to wait several months for the soft tissue healing as well to 'feel' less tension.
Technically you can have a sliding genioplasty after a prior genioglossus advancement procedure anytime 6 months afterwards. There is about the bone piece used for the genioglossus procedure that would preclude the bone cut for a sliding genioplasty.
