I'm 5'6", 185lbs, and wear a 36M bra. I am considering a reduction to deal with back pain. No surgeon I have spoken with is willing to give me even a rough estimate of how much tissue they might remove. My goal is to go down about five cup sizes, but the nurses have told me, "Most patients end up a B or C." That would be a loss of 11-12 cup sizes, which I think would look ridiculous on me. Is there a medical reason why a surgeon would be unable to take "only" 1000 g per side?
Answer: Cup size Cup size is very tough to predict. This is because a bra can’t be fit during the surgery, and typically not only the size but the shape of the breasts change so it’s difficult to know what size will feel comfortable postop. Grams are even tougher to predict, as it’s impossible to know how dense the breast tissue is. Generally speaking, for patients complaining of discomfort from their breasts, I advise them that approximately half of the breast volume will be removed, which is enough to elicit an effect on the symptoms, but still leave them full-chested.
