After a granuloma reaction to Volbella. Will my immune system create granulomas if I do fillers in the future? (Photo)

Question

I have had fillers for 7 years, including Voluma, Juvederm XC, and Restylane Silk, with no issues. After being injected with Volbella last year, approximately 4 months later, I simultaneously developed 4 granulomas. After taking steroids followed by Doxycycline, the granulomas are still there, but much flatter and smaller. My question is whether I can have dermal fillers (no more Volbella!) again at a future date, or will my immune system respond by creating more granulomas?? Please advise!!

I recommend a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist to improve your granulomas with either kenalog and/or 5 FU. I do 5f/steroids for all my patients with filler complications. You should be able to have filler in the future. Best, Dr. Emer

That could be either a granuloma or part of the filler. My approach to treating granulomas is as follows: you first try to mechanically break them down by vigorous massaging. If that doesn’t help, I inject Hyaluronidase to break them down as they universally form around hyaluronic gel itself and universally dissolve with Hyaluronidase. My success rate is 100% with this approach. For any procedure please make sure you contact a board-certified physician or another qualified practitioner to get the best results.
