Can I travel for Mexico vacation 5 weeks after umbilical hernia, diastasis, tummy tuck and ba? (photos)

I’m 5ft5, 125lbs, 40yrs old. I’m keen to get the surgery done in early Jan but have a trip planned in mid-Feb. I don’t want to be stuck at an all inclusive resort in compression gear 24 7. I’m open to wearing compression gear at night but would love to wear a bikini during the day. I’m thin and healthy but don’t want to wreck my vacation being in pain and still in major recovery mode. I will be traveling with my husband and 2 kids (ages 7 and 10). One PS thinks I will be fine .

Thank you for your question. It's best to check your surgeon's restrictions and recommendations. Depending on your post operative healing, I would approve my patients for this trip 5 weeks after surgery. I recommend no lifting, pushing, or pulling more than 10 pounds for 6 weeks, so as long as my patients are aware of this restriction, they are free to travel. Your incisions should technically be scars at this point, so no extra incisional care would be required, but again, this depends on your healing. We would recommend scar management at this point and avoiding direct sunlight to your new scars/incisions. I would recommend checking in with your surgeon just prior to your trip just make sure your incisions do not need any special care during your trip.

You should ask your surgeon and follow their advice and post op instructions. Something to consider is what activities you have planned while on vacation. I generally advise my patients to wait at least 6 weeks after surgery before they swim in pools, hot tubs, open bodies of water, or go in saunas or steam rooms. Also be careful with sun exposure on you incisions.

Thank you for your question. Recommendations for recovery time vary from surgeon to surgeon, so I would advise you to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in these procedures and let them know about your goals. While you may be able to travel at five weeks post-surgery, the results of your surgery will not be completely visible - you will still have noticeable swelling, and depending on how quickly you heal, you may still have some discomfort. Because of the restrictions after a tummy tuck and breast augmentation, and without knowing if you will experience complications or other issues, I would recommend scheduling the surgery for after your vacation, just to be safe. You should be ok to travel for vacation, but you will not be fully healed.  You can anticipate that you will still have swelling and your energy level may not be back to normal yet.  You should be fine to relax with your family, but heavy activities such as hiking may be too much.  I recommend speaking in more detail about your plans with your plastic surgeon.

It all depends on how your recover and how the wounds are at 5 weeks but you should be fine. Often at 5 weeks you can still have odd stitch issues so there may be some limitations. Best to discuss this with your PS.

Your surgeon is your best resource for answering your question.  Talk to him about activities to avoid, as well as your compression garments.  Have him check you prior to the trip to see if all the incisions are healed.
