I got my packing out yesterday and today i felt a heap of dried blood on the far end of my right nostril... On the skin on the side of nostril. I couldnt resist pulling on it and it came out along with a clear stitch that was in there. I looked inside my nose afterwards and saw a small red/pink dot from where the stitch was pulled out. Will this cause any damage to the final result? What are dissolvabl stitches used for in that area? Is it used to make the nose smaller?

Answer: Post-Operative Concerns Thank you for your question. I would return to your surgeon for an evaluation. I am not exactly sure from your description or picture if this is something that needs to be addressed. Sometimes a suture will fall out or come loose, and it may need to be replaced in the office. Again, the best thing would be to have your surgeon evaluate you in person. I hope that this helps!-David Gilpin

Answer: Clear stitches near the nostrils We often use a clear nylon non-dissolving suture to slightly narrow the footplates of the medial crura (part of the base of the columella). Apologies for being so technical. PDS (polydioxanone) suture is also clear and is dissolving and can be used in that area to reconstruct things as well. Many surgeons use it to attach cartilage grafts to the nasal tip supports - a columella strut for example. The good news is that we just about always use multiple sutures with each manoeuvre so that if one breaks free there is always a backup one. It is highly unlikely that removing one suture is going to make any change to your nose long-term. Regardless, you should definitely let your surgeon know as soon as possible.
