Cheek swelling after open rhinoplasty? (Photo)

I had an open rhinoplasty on April 1, and am very happy with the small amount of bruising I've experienced. However, I am really puffy and swollen in my cheeks. Is this normal? My follow up appointment is Weds 4/6 morning and of course I am going to ask, but would really appreciate any input between now and then.

It is often not mentioned in our pre-operative consultation but cheek swelling is actually fairly common after a rhinoplasty. Patients often notice a change in the shape of their overall face as the swelling tends to accumulate in the lower parts of the face along the jawline. It is typically worse in the first week and then rapidly resolves in the second. Do not worry overly about the cheek swelling as it always resolves and is a normal part of the recovery process in some people.

Hi. It is not at all unusual to have swelling and bruising on both cheeks after a rhinoplasty. Swelling and bruising on either side of the nose is especially pronounced if the nasal bones had to be broken or reshaped. Most of this swelling should subside by two weeks. Swelling of the nose however, may take much longer to resolve.All the very best in your recovery.

Hello and thank you for your question and post. Swelling around the cheeks/face is quite normal and worst 3-4 days after surgery. This is the worst it'll get. Especially if they had to break the sides of your nose -which I assume - b/c you have a plastic splint. Hang in there! Also, ice at this point won't do too much. Hope this helps and good luck!
