Is J-plasma necessary after liposuction?

Question

I am considering a liposuction surgery. My surgeon stated that I might not have too much excess skin as I am young (25). He also advised that the excess skin that I do have afterwards would be the same with diet/ exercise weight loss. Should I use J-plasma to tighten the skin? Is it usually helpful with excess skin?

Thank you for your question.  I typically recommend Jplasma assisted liposuction for most of my patients.  I find that most patients can always use a little help with the skin retraction.  I would speak with your surgeon and follow their recommendation since a proper evaluation would have to be done in person.  Best of luck to you.

Great question. It is not necessary for J plasma to be performed with liposuction. Please visit a board certified plastic surgeon for a detailed surgical plan to achieve your desired results.

BodyTite will do better and is totally safe and effective.  J Plasma is like a hot sparkler under the skin destroying everything in sight (nerves, skin etc....) Some docs can do a decent job with j plasma but why take that risk!!!!  Sincerely, David Hansen,MD

Plucky6872I appreciate your concern, however your surgeon is right because you are young, skin retraction after liposuction should not be an issue. Also, J Plasma skin tightening is yet another new modality tied to liposuction that is unproven, especially in reputable medical journals.  The manufacturer, and surgeons who spent over $100,000 for the machine, believe that there is “some” improvement. There is been no valid medical research documenting this skin tightening phenomenon.The most important aspect your upcoming procedure is the board-certified plastic Surgeon performing it. Traditional liposuction is still the gold standard. Good luck.

It is hard to tell for sure without an examination. Generally speaking, J-Plasma can provide minimal improvement in case of loose skin. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.

Jplasma doesn’t really tighten skin, I would describe it as more making the skin adherent time the deeper layers so that after the treatment it feels tight.   it’s helpful and so far (I’ve been using it for about 6 months) I am loving the results it creates.   so while not required, I like adding it to my lipo cases.

Dear 'Plucky',You are 25 years old so I highly doubt that you will have any issues with your skin unless you have:Had children, gained and lost weight (several times), have stretch marks or loose skin now.Traditional liposuction causes tremendous skin contraction postoperatively.  The vast majority of my patients do not require or desire any type of skin tightening post op.The only way to truly answer your question would be to examine you and assess your skin.J Plasma appears to be another new technology 'gimmick' without proper medical studies and reviews in reputable medical journals.Dr T

JPlasma is the latest in skin contracting modalities.  The difference is minimal, in my opinion, except to the manufacturer of these cosmeceuticals.   If you are a good liposuction candidate and do not have true excess skin, then you should be fine with liposuction alone.  Surgical skill and judgment are the most important criteria in selecting a plastic surgeon.
