I am unhappy with the vertical length of my chin. I would like to reduce the length by 1-1.5cms. However the idea of having screws and plates and other medical hardware permanently "installed" does not sit right with me. Is this possible via shaving down the bone of the chin alone without the use of hardware?

I would encourage you to stay the course and be patient and not judge your results early.
At six weeks your bones are solidly healed and you cannot reverse the procedure easily at this time.
Tell yourself that you will stop trying to make a decision or judge the outcome of the surgery for six...
Following a genioplasty procedure, the step-off areas can be shaved and any deficient areas or voids can be filled with a type of bone putty or calcium hydroxyapatite. I prefer the bone putty. Why do the plate and screws need to be removed? Your profile appearance looks good.
Without the benefit of a full set of photos, it appears that your chin is short and slightly prominent. A slight set-back with simultaneous lengthening would probably improve your overall facial balance. Fillers would not be advised in your case.
