I am concerned of picking the perfect size of ideal implant to fit me. Currently I am a B and I am looking to be a full D. My width of my breast is 12.5cm - in which I was recommended 495 cc ideal implant. But, i’ve looked at references on this site and found 495 cc to appear way too big for my preference. the nurse recommended the doctor to fill the 495 cc to just 480 cc. I am not sure whether play it “safer” with 455 cc or get the 480 cc. Any suggestions?

Answer: Should I meet the plastic surgeon when having breast augmentation or is a nurse 'sufficient'? Please, meet your surgeon too Good day and thank you for your questions. Pictures would be helpful but I understand it is very personal to share pictures of breasts. There is nothing wrong in meeting a nurse to start the conversation but patients should always meet the plastic surgeon too, several days BEFORE your surgery. The plastic surgeon is doing your surgery and you should have that discussion with him/her too. Many things must be discussed and taken into consideration: types of implants with their pros and cons, planes of implantation (subglandular, subfascial, subpectoral), the "no-touch" technique, the Keller funnel, complications such as capsular contracture, ALCL (rare type of lymphoma so far seen only with textured implants), symmastia (a "unibrow of the breasts"), etc.As for sizing... I like to use "special" sizers in my office which mimic the final results very well, much better than regular implants or bag of water of rice one would put in her bra. The sizers do not allow for "air" between the skin and the implants and quite a good approximate of the final results. Both implants you are looking at are very large for a petite person such as you, according to your dimensions. Have you had children yet? How is your skin envelop? Skin elasticity? What plane has your "nurse" discussed with you?Keep in mind that the bigger you go, the more complications you can have. Unless you want something "less natural", I would go with the smaller size. But again, your surgeon should be available to help and guide you.Best of luck!Kind regards,Dr. Marc DuPere, aesthetic plastic surgeon

Answer: Is a nurse sufficient or should I meet the plastic surgeon when having breast augmentation? Sizing a patient with breast implants is an art as much as a science and depends very much on the experience of the surgeon. Also, your wishes, tissues and expectations. Do you understand the trade-offs of larger implants and do those trade-offs make sense to you. I strongly recommend that you meet with your surgeon in person at least once and with enough time before surgery to feel comfortable with your choices. As to sizing, Mentor has a sizing system of shells that you put into an un-padded bra that is very accurate in helping you to understand how different size implants will appear in clothing. Your tissue dimensions and characteristics influence how large an implant is needed/desirable in your specific case. You need to have your questions answered by the doctor , and feel comfortable with the plan. I meet with all of my patients for an in depth exam and discussion weeks before any surgery. Better to have your questions and concerns addressed as much as possible before surgery rather than being surprised after. Breast augmentation, more than many procedures is a process, not just a procedure. You need to understand and have considered the specific trade-offs and choices in your case. This requires a meeting with your plastic surgeon.
