Can a breast augmentation be performed while taking oral isotretinoin x 10 weeks?

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  I agree with your sentiment on timing but for risk of a worsened scar I would wait at least 6-12 months after accutane cessation before pursuing surgery.

every plastic surgeon has his own preoperative protocol, which he recommends to his patients. Most will recommend you to wait at least 6 months prior to elective procedure. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.

Thank you for your question.  I typically recommend patients to wait a minimum of 6 months after finishing isotretinoin.  I would suggest following your Surgeons and Dermatologists recommendations.  Best of luck to you. 

Hello and thank you for your recent question.  Accutane can delay healing as it is an immune suppressant drug and causes increased scaring.  In our office we recommend waiting the 6 months post accutane to have any cosmetic procedure done. Best of luck!

We prefer to wait at least 6 months after stopping Accutane prior to elective cosmetic surgery.

It is best for you to have completed your Accutane 6 months prior to having surgery.  It is not worth an increased risk of wound healing complications.  Be sure to discuss all medications including supplements with your surgeon.

Your question is a good one, because there is a lack of hard evidence on the negative effects of this medication on the healing of a straight line scar. The negative effects are definitely more associated with the healing of a large surface wound, for example, healing of a laser procedure on the face. Because this is elective surgery, it may be prudent to wait 6 months.

The standard of care is to wait a year and some surgeons will do this after six months once stopping the Accutane.Yes there is a recent data that suggests that this is excessive and the surgery can be done earlier. However it is not written by plastic surgeons and you will be hard-pressed to find a surgeon who is willing to do it before six months. Especially elective cosmetic surgery. My advice to you is wait the six months and have the surgery with peace of mind. 

Just wait the six months. What’s the rush? This is elective surgery. Best to wait for the optimal circumstances.

I tell patients at least 6 months.  That is pretty standard.  I would not push that even though the evidence based part of that recommendation is somewhat thin.
