Question

Can an alar base reduction be performed without changing the shape of the nostrils? My nostrils are triangular(almost heart shaped) I don’t want to change the shape of my nostrils but I would like the width of my actual nose to be brought in slightly...is there anyway for this to be done without changing the shape of my nostrils dramatically but preferably at all?

The answer is it depends on exactly what is necessary in performing an alar base reduction (i.e. is it to narrow the inter-alar distance, reduce nostril flare,  nostril size, or is it a combination)  Usually, there is some change in the shape of the nostrils, especially if tip work is done.  Best wishes.

The purpose of an alarplasty is to narrow the nostrils, thereby changing the shape of the nostrils.  If you are interested in narrowing the overall width of the nose, you may benefit from a full rhinoplasty.  I recommend you schedule a consultation with a plastic surgeon for evaluation of your nose and facial balance for further recommendations.  Best of luck.

The purpose of the alarplasty is to narrow the nostrils so by definition it will change the shape of your nostrils.  The question is how much change do you request versus how much the surgeon believes you need and how you feel about that change.  Make sure you consult with a board certified facial plastic surgeon who understands proper nasal aesthetic balance.
