Would an aerial reduction give me the results I want? (Photo)

Question

I hate my breasts because of how big my areolas are. It makes me feel really unattractive and effects my relationships. However, because they're so light I feel like the scar from the reduction would be very visible. What do you think?

HI,You ask a very good question. Your left areola is larger than the right and is quite pale. An areolar reduction to match the other side will have to remove a fair amount of skin and will result in a bunched scar for several months. The bunching will settle down, but the scar may ultimately widen or appear irregular (even in the best of hands). Yo need to ask yourself whether yo will be satisfied with anything other than a perfect scar. If not, you may want to leave it alone.All my best,Daniel A. Medalie, mD

Hello, thank you for your question. It is hard to predict how the scar will heal. It may be a bit more sharper color difference between the areola and breast skin after surgery.

I don’t think your areolae are abnormally large at all.  It certainly would not be worth the scars involved to reduce them.

Thank you for sharing your question and photograph.  The decision to pursue treatment always involves a benefit to cost evaluation.  For you I think the scarring associated with an areolar reduction would not be worth the subtle improvement in areola size and symmetry.

Thank you for the excellent question. You are exactly right- this is the major trade-off with areola reduction surgery- the appearance of the final scar.  This area does have a tendency to lead to scar widening or to a sunburst scar pattern, which can be noticeable. My recommendation is to ask you plastic surgeon to let you review photos from similar cases. This will help you determine if the surgery will give you the result you are looking for.
