Is 50 years old safe to do a tummy tuck?

Congratulations on deciding to undergo surgery! Thank you for your question. There is not a issue with the age, but you need to be healthy, for safety reasons, to be a good candidate for the procedures you want at the same time, your labs and  cardiovascular preoperative evaluation must be optimal.

As long as you're healthy and your blood work ok there is no problem on you getting a tummy tuck. Tummy tuck is a very powerful technique in the right hands, and can have dramatic results if done correctly.  You definitely have to choose your surgeon correctly and make sure that he/she has the training and experience to meet your goals with absolute safety.  Don’t settle for less than a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with specialized expertise in this procedure.

If you are in good health and get clearance for surgery you should be fine. I have had patients in their 60's and older who have done fine. Be sure to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon. Good luck.

I'd like to break down your question into two questions; is 50 years old too old and is a BMI of 33 too high. Age by itself is not a major issue for abdominoplasty.  Health is the important factor but it depends on more than one number. I have performed abdominoplasties on healthy 80 year old patients  without incident but only after a preoperative examination by their physicians. As far as BMI, there is data that suggests that complications are more frequent if the BMI exceeds 30 and really goes up beyond 35. Having said that, there is also data that says it doesn't matter much. Some plastic surgeons are very strict about BMI, others are much more lenient. I would say that if your regular physician feels that you are healthy enough to consider abdominolpasty, I would look for a board certified plastic surgeon who is comfortable with performing an abdominoplasty for you. By the way, loosing a few pounds to achieve a BMI of 30 usually doesn't work well as most patients simply gain it back. If however you want to loose several pounds for better health, I would do it before surgery. Best of luck.

The optimal candidate for surgery is in generally good health and has reached a healthy stable weight (preferably with a BMI < 30).Age only factors in so much as it may be a reflection of overall health. However, a healthy 50 yo is a better candidate than an unhealthy 30 yo.With regards to your specific question, the higher the BMI the higher the relative risk of all complications (bleeding, infection, delayed healing etc.). The high risk candidates have a BMI < 30. That is not to say we do not operate on patients with a BMI > 30. Thank you for your question.  More important than your age is your overall medical health and suitability for general anesthesia.  As long as you are healthy, there should be no issue with being 50 years of age.  With regards to BMI, you definitely have more complications once your BMI increases over 30.  Ideally, you would get your BMI as close to 25 as possible for the best results with the lowest risk for complications.  Good luck.
