How long should my lips feel stiff and swollen after Juvederm? (Photo)

Thank you for your question. It is very common for the lips to look
over corrected or fake the next day. I often tell my patients that this
is the "oh my gosh" day. This is due to all the swelling
that ensues. It may last a few days with every day showing a decrease
in swelling. The more you ice the first day or two, the less swelling
you will have. I would wait a few days to a week and then return to
your injector if you still have concerns after that. If you like the
look of the lips at some point during the swelling reduction, then take a
picture. This way you know what volume you like in the lips for the
future.

It is common to get swelling after fillers into the lips. It is not normal to have irregularities or severe swelling. If you are unhappy you should speak to your physician and have the area injected with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that reverses the hyaluronic acid filler. For the next injections, consider Restylane Silk with cannula injection, this technique will limit the pain, swelling or bruising after the filler placement. Lips are sensitive to any trauma and multiple needle injections from filler will cause them to swell. This is normal and some patient's swelling resolves faster than others.  It is hard to predict how long they will be swollen, but if you avoid spicy foods, hot liquids, excessive lip use/massage of the lips, they will calm down eventually.  You should revisit your injector and be examined, sometimes some medication may be prescribed to speed up the swelling resolution.

a Juvederm, Restylane or Perlane treatment there is hardly any downtime at all.
Although, with lip treatments, there is a certain amount of noticeable swelling
that can last for several days.I suggest you consult with your board certified facial plastic surgeon who performed the injections. Schedule a follow-up consultation to express your concerns.

Bruising and swelling after Juvederm lip injections can last up to two weeks.  If you are not happy with your treatment at that time, please return to your doctor for assessment.

Juvederm is a commonly used product for the lips.  Of course the more that is injected, the more swelling and stiffness should be expected.  In most cases, I use no more than 1/2 syringe for the lips.  Good news is that you have very full lips now, but bad news is that the stiffness may last a bit longer as "more" product dissolves.  If you truly cannot stand it, you could visit your PS and ask about options to partially remove the Juvederm.

Hi Kandjay22, It sounds like you may have been overfilled for your anatomy. I would suggest that you massage the lips as much as possible. If after two weeks you are not please with your result, you can go back to the injector and ask them to put some hyaluronidase into the area to "melt" some of the filler. 

Hello Kandyjay22,By two weeks out your swelling will have gone down.  If your lips are still feeling firm and unnatural this is likely related to the amount of filler injected.  If you are unhappy with the injection or the feeling there is a material that can be injected to dissolve it.  I would discuss your concerns with your surgeon to see what options are available.  I hope this helps and good luck.

I think your lips look amazing and very full!  It is not unusual to have a feeling of swelling or stiffness for a couple of weeks following filler in the lips.  Every patient and every injection experience is different.  In addition, you used twice the amount of filler this time around so I'm not surprised your lips feel more swollen than the last time.  I would give it another week or so to see if your lips soften.  If they don't you should talk with your physician about using some hyaluronidase to try and reverse the effect.  Of course, even if you do nothing the filler effect should eventually wear off.

For most patients, swelling and bruising is resolved by 2 weeks. If it is past 2 weeks and they still don't feel quite right, it might be time to follow up with the treatment provider to inquire which Juvederm they used (Ultra, Ultra Plus or Voluma). Also, since you had a full 1ml syringe injected (more than you've done in the past), discuss with the person who treated you how much of this is swelling vs. the actual new size of the lips due to the filler.
