A revision rhinoplasty is performed after a primary or first rhinoplasty, usually tocorrect something that didn’t turn out exactly as you expected.
The biggest mistakes I see are when someone goes in for a primary rhinoplasty and was told it will be an "easy" surgery. Rhinoplasty can be straightforward, but even primary surgery must be taken seriously by the surgeon and nasal structure be respected. Revision rhinoplasty is often more complex and requires restoration of support and structure along with the improvement of nasal aesthetics.
A revision rhinoplasty is a second/ third/ fourth procedure to try to improve upon the initial, or primary, rhinoplasty result. Revision rhinoplasty is incredibly complicated and should not be performed by an inexperienced surgeon. Primary rhinoplasty shouldn't either but we see a lot of referrals for revision of work performed by surgeons who do not perform alot of rhinoplasty.
Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery is arguably the most difficult facial plastic surgical procedure to perform. In that regard, the experience of your rhinoplasty surgeon is critical for achieving a desirable and pleasing result: the first time.Dr. Joseph
Whereas in primary rhinoplasty the tissues have not been altered, in revision surgery the surgeon encounters scar tissue , as well as tissues that have been modified by removal of tissue. Revision surgery usually requires grafting, because most revisions are done due to over resection.
A revision rhinoplasty refers to a nose that has had a least one previous surgery. Find a plastic surgeon with ELITE credentials who performs hundreds of rhinoplasties and rhinoplasty revisions each year. Then look at the plastic surgeon's website before and after photo galleries to get a sense of who can deliver the results. Kenneth Hughes, MD Los Angeles, CA
Dear Mikile:Aso-called regular rhinoplasty, or primary rhinoplasty, is the first nasalcosmetic surgery procedure.Thosepatients who need to have a second procedure because of some imperfection orcomplication from the original surgery will be said to have a revision rhinoplastysurgery. Some people require more thanone revision.Generally, it is best toaccomplish everything you can at the first surgical session. The mostexperienced nasal surgeons tend to have a lower revision rate. That means they tend to get it rightthe first time. Remember that cosmeticnasal surgery is a complex, complicated, and technically-demandingoperation.It is the most challengingoperation in the realm of cosmetic surgery. As you can imagine, a 1/8 or 1/16 of an inch can make a big differencein this operation; it makes little difference in body liposuction, breastaugmentation, breast reduction or some of the body cosmetic procedures. In fact, cosmetic surgery of the nose haslittle in common with body cosmetic surgery.Even the instruments are different. If youare considering rhinoplasty, do your homework. Visit a lot of websites. Look for websites that show rich experienceand a high-degree of specialization and focus.Look for practices that "major" in cosmetic nasal surgery.Look at the computer imaging results comparedto the final result. The more photosthat you see on a website, the more you can glean the talent and style of thesurgeon. If the noses look natural, youcan bet you have a good chance of also receiving a natural and, therefore, satisfactory result.Readbooks.Learn everything you can.Study up.The time you put in before surgery is the most important time becauseyou want to do it right the first time.RobertKotler, MD, FACS Author,SECRETS OF A BEVERLY HILLS COSMETIC SURGEONAuthor,THE ESSENTIAL COSMETIC SURGERY COMPANION
Primary rhinoplasty is any nasal surgery when the anatomy has not been altered by prior surgery, trauma, or treatments. Primary rhinoplasty may involve any part of the nose, such as the bridge or the tip.Revision rhinoplasty is nasal surgery when the anatomy has been altered. Scar tissue is always present with revision surgery. Cartilage and/or bone has been modified. Revision rhinoplasty is typically much more complicated that primary rhinoplasty. Revision procedures may also involve any part of the nose.Rhinoplasty, primary or revision, may be performed for cosmetic, reconstructive, or both reasons. Best,Dr. Chaboki
A primary rhinoplasty occurs when the nose is being operated upon for the first time. This may or may not include cartilage grafts. A revision rhinoplasty occurs on the second third or fourth time and is usually more complicated due to scar tissue. A revision rhinoplasty can involve cartilage grafting, or a simple further reduction in the overall size and shape. A revision nasal surgery is one that is performed after a prior rhinoplasty surgery to improve or correct the results from the original surgical procedure. It often requires greater experience and artistry to perform a secondary procedure. If you are contemplating either an initial rhinoplasty or a secondary nose surgery, I would suggest that you find a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and ideally a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) or a facial plastic surgeon (otolaryngologist) with extensive experience in rhinoplasty surgery that they trust and are comfortable with. You should discuss your concerns with that surgeon in person. Robert Singer, MD FACS La Jolla, California
