Why do some doctors use drains an others don’t? I am getting 205cc silicone cohesive gel implants (Inspira/Natrelle)

Question

My PS said they didn’t use drains- is that common? I am getting 205cc silicone cohesive gel implants (inspira/naturelle). I have had 2 c- sections, Laparoscopy for Endometriosis, and rhinoplasty/genioplasty in my past with no problems... so, why do some people use drains and others don’t?

Good question. When I do breast augmentation, I do not use drains. However on a redo, I sometimes do. I also use them on tummy tucks. I use drains when I feel there is a raw space on the inside that isn't completely filled with tissue (or implant), as I worry about fluid accumulating. Similar to if you had a blister, the skin gets irritated then forms a space, and the body fills it with fluid. However, all of us have different experiences so that our surgical care tends to vary. Plastic surgery is an art in addition to a science, so that is why you see variability in surgical practices.

Thanks for your question!  Because fluid collection following a breast augmentation is uncommon, most surgeons do not use drains for this surgery.  Most times, they are used for breast reduction or tummy tuck because the incidence of fluid collection or seromas are higher when tissue is being removed.  I hope that helps!  Good luck!

Using drains after breast surgery seems to be an older way of doing the surgery.  I don't think that most modern surgeons use drains after breast implant surgery, as fluid collections are a very rare problem after this surgery.  Good luck!

Some plastic surgeons use drains with textured implants in order to help prevent rotation, but I would use them only when a lift is being done at the same time. Assuming your implants are smooth round, not textured cohesive shaped, it is more likely a preference of your plastic surgeon.

Truthfully - at least around me - most people who place drains during a breast augmentation have retired by now.  Not very many people place a drain after a straightforward breast augmentation.  So, my answer would be, definitely NO DRAIN!  Best of luck.
