I'm 40lb overweight due to the depo shot and now able to maintain my weight but havign trouble losing it. I'll be getting lipo and hear it's 10 pounds max. Can that 10 pounds be ALL from my mid section or does it have to be spread out across multiple areas?
Answer: How much weight can I lose during liposuction? Thank you for your question. I think you should be focused on the weight that you want to lose from the procedure. Removing 1 L of fat is equivalent to 2.2 pounds of weight. Also remember that when you have lliposuction, your board certified plastic surgeon will inject tumescent solution. This can Be as much as up to seven or 8 L depending on how much liposuction is planned. The 10 pounds that you're describing Is about 5 Liters total volume which means fat and tumescent solution. Typically this is about 3 L of fat and 2 L of tumescent solutions on average. In The weight that you're talking about losing in the midsection Maybe possible But unlikely because most people's fat is not just isolated to one body region. I would recommend that you discuss this with your board-certified plastic surgeon to make sure that they're removing what is safe and if they are doing what's called high-volume liposuction meaning more than 5 L of tumescent solution and fat that you spend the night an accredited overnight facility. I hope this helps. All the best,Carlos Mata M.D.,MBA, FACSBoard-certified plastic surgeon

Answer: Liposuction is not a means of weight loss One of the most common misconceptions surrounding liposuction is that of weight loss. It is a body contouring tool which is best employed in healthy patients who have reached a stable weight (preferably with a BMI less than 30).The legal limits for fat removal in an office setting is 4-5 liters (varying from state to state). This equates to approximately 11 lbs. However, this is an estimate and not an actual accounting of weight removed. There are no such limits for procedures performed in a hospital setting.Ultimately, those who approach the procedure as an alternative to traditional means of weight loss (diet and exercise) are bound to be disappointed. As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

Answer: Weight Loss Lipo Lipo isn't a weight loss procedure per se. You do lose weight with the procedure but it's not nearly as dramatic as the appearance. The restriction is the total volume aspirate (5 liters) not the fat. Within the total aspirate is a certain amount of fat. This varies. It ranges from 1 liter to 4 liters max. So that's ~ 2-8 lbs. In patients that have a very large amount of fat to remove, I perform the procedure in stages. I focus on the front, then the sides. See attached video.
