Seven weeks after liposuction, swelling after having salty food?

Question

I had a barbecue at my mother in-law and meat was salty. I ate it and now am swollen in certain areas of body. Will it go away?. Any advise please. I started to drink lots of water.

Yes, salty food can cause water retention. You can have swelling, which can last 3-6 months after your procedure. I recommend adding hyperbaric oxygen and lymphatic massage along with your compression to help decrease swelling. To improve your final results, I also recommend adding vanquish for further fat removal, exilis/venus legacy for skin tightening, cellutone/z wave to make the skin smooth, remove scar tissue, and improve the skin’s appearance. Hello mjsoza,What you are describing is within the normal post operative course after liposuction. Liposuction disrupts the normal channels (lymphatics) that your body uses to bring fluid back to your heart.  Over time your body will rebuild these channels and the swelling that your experience in your earlier months of healing will dissipate.  I recommend that my post liposuction patient eat a low sodium diet and drink plenty of fluids while still in the early stages of healing to encourage swelling reduction.  So you are correct in drinking lots of water.  Rebound swelling, which is likely what you are experiencing, can also occur when you  exercise or do any strenuous activity in those early months.  If the swelling does not go down over the next few days, be sure to talk with you plastic surgeon about concerns.Best of Luck!Dr. Rednam

hello mjsoza Most swelling and bruising will heal in the first 2 weeks, but can persist for up to 6-8 weeks. You should visit or contact your PS about this concern. #postop #recovery

Thank you for your question. After liposuction there is a process of swelling that peaks at 3 days after surgery and then undergoes the first stage of major resolution in the first 2 weeks after surgery.  The later phase of healing takes place over the 2-3 months after surgery where everything really settles and softens. Salty foods can cause water retention and more swelling. Best is to keeo a low salt diet and follow your surgeons  instructions.

Swelling following liposuction can persist for 3-4 months or longer depending on the extent of the procedure. During this recovery phase, a patient may also be more reactive to salty foods. The swelling that results will resolve.

It is perfectly normal during the early stages of healing for swelling to correspond to diet, activity, and exercise. The degree of swelling will vary significantly from patient to patient.
