Could leakage of a saline and capsule implant cause a skin rash?

Thank you for your question.It is unlikely that a spontaneous deflation of a saline breast implant has caused the rash you are describing, but it is impossible to say without pictures and all of your information plus a consultation.

A saline implant leaks sterile salt water.  It should cause no rash.  There have been reported rarely some infectious issues with breast implants so you should be checked out by your plastic surgeon.

Not quite sure of the progression of issues. did you have replacement? It sounds like you did not. Then I must assume the leaking saline has become fungal contaminated!!! Or worse. Best to have immediate removal and culture of any fluids in the implant pockets... 

Thanks for your interesting question.It is not uncommon for saline breast implants to have ruptures or even slow leaks after many years.  Over time the implant shell can develop a small defect causing the saline solution to leak and for your breast to lose volume.  I don't believe that this would be related to a skin rash.  In any case I do recommend that you seek the opinion of a dermatologist regarding your skin concerns.  Once that is addressed it is reasonable to consider exchange of your current implant for new ones, or another procedure to address any concerns you may have regarding your breast.Best Wishes

First, it is exceedingly rare to have a slow leaking saline implant.  If indeed there is a leak- complete deflation of the implant will occur relatively quickly.i would have your rash evaluated by a dermatologist and I do not believe it has anything to do with your implant.

This is a very good question, but I don't have a good answer for you.  I must say that in all of my years of practice I can't imagine this is the cause.  I would be certain to follow up with your Plastic Surgeon and your Internist, possibly as well as a Dermatologist.  I think you would be safe in having a replacement with another implant, whether it be saline or silicone.Good luck to you.Frank Rieger M.D.  Tampa Plastic Surgeon
