Submental Lipectomy. Pros Vs Cons? Can you help me understand what risks I am taking. I am a 33 year old male. Approximately 5-9 and 195lbs. I have a slight double chin, but was told that if we do the submental Lipectomy the fat will never grow under my chin again. Good idea or bad idea? Thanks in advance. Have a blessed day!

Answer: Fat Removal from Underneath the Chin As long as the fat removal is overdone, the risk is very small in the hands of an experienced face and neck lift surgeon. In your situation, my greatest concern would be that the fat removal (lipectomy) will not provide you with the benefit you may be looking for. Before going ahead, you should discuss the pros and cons of chin augmentation and necklift with your facial plastic surgeon so that you are sure you decide on the correct procedure for you that will deliver the best results.

Answer: Pros and Cons of submental lipectomy or neck liposuction Some are born with too much neck fat, while many acquire excess neck fat with age. Submental lipectomy or neck liposuction removes fat from the neck and submental area (ie. under the chin). Small incisions are made under the chin and usually behind the ear to suction out or directly cut out the extra fat. The procedure normally takes less than an hour, and the immediate recovery is relatively quick. For younger patients, neck fat reduction alone may be sufficient to improve a double chin, although a chin implant may also be required. For older patients with excess skin, neck fat reduction alone may be insufficient to improve the neck and jawline. As a result, a lower face lift or neck lift may be required, in addition to the lipectomy or liposuction.Recovery is easier with liposuction alone, but the cosmetic results may be better if supplemental procedures are suggested by your plastic surgeon. Speak with a neck lift surgeon to help determine appropriate procedures for you. Best,Dr. Chaboki
