Dry eyes after Botox! Is there anything I can do?

Question

I had Botox in my crows feet for the first time. I know that there is nothing I can do to get rid of it other than let it wear off, but i feel too much has been potentially been put in that area, it is sore when I blink & kind of feels like I’m blinking upwards instead of the eye blinking downwards, so tugging on the under eye skin. Is there anything I can do to maybe just ease how itchy it is making my eyes?

With lubrication it is important to do this regularly. The thicker the preparation, the longer it will last. So at the thinner end, you have hypromellose, systane etc. You can buy a gel (eg clinics), which is intermediate and a paraffin based ointment (eg lacrilube, simple eye ointment) which is thickest. The thicker ones blur the vision the most so it is a balance between lubrication and blurry vision. Ideally in the day you want a thin drop used regularly - at least 6 times a day. If the eye is red then do get assessed by an Ophthalmologist.

dry eye sometimes does occur after Botox around the eyes and can be alleviated with Systane eye drops which is saline without a preservative and available without a prescription

Simply go to a pharmacy near you and ask for natural tears. Placing a drop in each eye a few times daily will help you significantly. Good luck from New York City

Hi Tracy, As you said, the botox will need time to "wear off" over the next couple of months. As you describe, you may be having some dry eye from the altered eye closure. A careful examination would help. Most importantly for dry eyes is good hydration/protection. Tears wash away dirt from the cornea, the skin of the eye. For dry eyes, artificial tears can be extremely helpful. Tear gels or eye-specific antibiotic ointments may also be helpful when artificial tears are not enough. Good luck!

It is very important to maintain appropriate moisture for your eyes when you experience dry eyes after Botox.  Hopefully this effect will wear off by 3 months.  In the meantime I would recommend a topical eye ointment at bedtime and moisturizing drops during the day.  Is important to follow up with your to physician to make certain that you were not developing corneal problems due to the dry eye.
