Can I get lip fillers with colitis?

Hi I’ve wanted lip fillers for years now and when I went to get them I was advised that because I have colitis I had it for 20 years (I’m now39) and not had a bad flare up for at least 8 years I take a small dose of asacol mezalasine daily as a precautionary measure please cou;d you give some advise as after years of plucking up the courage I fell deflated.. I contacted my consultant who could not advise me on this as she knows nothing about fillers

Hello and thank you for your question.  Yes, although you have a history of colitis, it is safe for you to be treated with fillers (such as Juvederm, Restylane or Belotero).  Be sure to seek an experienced injector who specializes in facial aesthetics for best results.  Good luck.

As long as you don't have any active issues relating to your Colitis there should be no problem doing the lips.  I do caution however about doing large amounts of HA filler in particular Volbella, Vollure, and Voluma at one time (>3 syringes) since there has been more reports of granulomas which I believe is related to how these fillers are made and how it reacts to an immune system that has gone awry.

Yes, you can have fillers with a history of colitis. These fillers are good for lip augmentation. It will take 1-2 weeks for final results. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. Best, Dr. Emer

Colitis is an autoimmune condition . As long as you are stable there is no reason that you cannot have filler . I have treated patient with juvederm who have colitis ( stable) and there hasn't been any issue.I would try again. Good luck

If your colitis is under control, I see no contraindication to HA fillers.  However, I would not recommend collagen stimulating fillers such as Bellafill or Sculptra.  Fat transfer is also an option, depending on the nature of the volume loss.

So asacol is an immunomodulator which affects your immune system as a whole to help curb the bouts of colitis. While no study can prove safety either way, thinking about it theoretically, the fillers should be safe and the only issue might be the duration of fillers as the way they disappear is our own body's immune system eats them up over time and this might be different in you: it could be longer or shorter. I’m sorry you were unable to get the treatment you were looking forward to. I have treated many patients with colitis and other inflammatory disorders with lip filler without any adverse events. We use exclusively hyaluronic acid fillers in the lips. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be removed/ dissolved with hyaluronidase should there be a complication . Having said that, I would not anticipate any problems.  As always, please make sure you see a board certified dermatologist, plastic surgeon, facial plastic surgeon or oculoplastic surgeon who is an experienced injector. Best to you.

I do not seen any reason why you cannot have lip filler treatment with a history of well controlled colitis. I recommend you see an experienced injector for an in person consultation. Good luck.

I don't see any reason not to get fillers.  Asacol is an anti-flammatory medication that is activated by the bacteria in your colon and is though to have a topical or local anti-inflammatory effect--not systemic.  The medication should not affect lip filler.  You may break the filler down a bit more quickly than the average person because the colitis itself--you may have more pro-inflammatory markers in the blood, but that is iffy.  I'd say go for it and get you some luscious lips!!!
