What are the doctors opinions on using staples or stitches? Is there an area of the face where one is better than the other? Read staples aren't a good idea ever. Is this true? A doctor I had a consult with stated they use them in the hair because its easier on the hair. I want to have a face lift this winter. Is it appropriate for me to tell a doctor no staples?
Answer: Staples in facelifts You would really be surprised how many surgeons use staples on facelifts. Personally, I feel that staple are not, well, very "plastic surgeon- like", if you see what I mean. Your supposedly paying for a highly skilled artist. I think using staples are crude. I take the extra time and care to use sutures, even in the hairline. They give more precise closure and I feel that little details, even in hidden areas like behind the ear, really make a difference in the overall result. Using sutures is not as easy, but attention to detail really counts in plastic surgery.

CONTACT NOW Answer: Face Lift Sutures, Staples or both Staples within the hair bearing tissue is a great idea as no hair need be shaved to prevent hair from being brought into the wound when tying sutures knots. My patients have not found them uncomfortable. On the other hand, staples should not be used in non-hair regions of the face.

Answer: Sutures Not Staples For Facelift
Thank you for your question. I use sutures not staples in facelift surgery. The primary reason I do not use staples is that patients complain that they are uncomfortable especially when lying down at night in bed.
Some surgeons used staples in the hairline to lessen bleeding however staples should never be used in the non-hair bearing areas of the skin.
Although some studies disagree, I find that scarring is better with sutures than with staples. Because staples are metal can compress the skin on either side of the scar and create cross hatch marks on the skin which I find sutures do not do.

Answer: Facelift - Sutures vs. Staples
Staples can be used within the hairline, and most plastic surgeons prefer stitches, or sutures, in areas where visible scarring is a concern. Sutures tend to leave less pronounced scars, so some surgeons use them exclusively, even in the hairline where scars are better hidden. If this is an issue that concerns you, it is absolutely appropriate for you to discuss it with your surgeon. Your doctor should be able to explain to you the reasons for his or her preference and should take your concerns and goals into account. If you're not satisfied with the answers you get, you're always entitled to seek a second opinion. Good luck!

Answer: Sutures vs. staples
Stitches work better for most patients. Although I previously used staples in the hairline portion of the incision, some patients complained that they were uncomfortable, especially behind the ears. And they have to be removed of couse. I have now for many years used dissolving sutures which are great for healing and comfort and usually dissolve on their own- a great benefit for patients from out of town or whose schedules are busy...The scars are the same in the hairline as long as the tension is appropriate..
