Tummy Tuck Revision: Do I need a revision or just time? (Photos)

Few people know what fat necrosis is, how it occurs, or why it is important.  Fat necrosis is dead fat that occurs usually secondary to the lack of blood supply.  Without the blood supply, the fat dies and becomes calcified and hard.  This necrotic fat then may be painful or create an unpleasing appearance.  Fat necrosis typically occurs as a result of trauma or secondary to transfer of fat during a surgical procedure.  Most commonly, this dead fat phenomenon is secondary to BBL procedures.The fat necrosis may need to be removed if it persists over a
period of months or is extremely painful. Sometimes the dead fat can
create dents, and sometimes it can create a large unsightly lump.Follow your PS's post-operative protocol and your healing will progress. 

You should first see your plastic surgeon to make sure there is no fluid collection called a seroma. Other than that I agree your lower abdomen could be contoured a bit better. You should wait at least six months and then go over with your surgeon what the options might be.

It is still to early to see the final results of your surgery. You will need to wait at least 6 months for swelling to reduce. I understand your concern. However, without a proper assessment it would be difficult to determine what is wrong. It is best that you visit your plastic surgeon for further assessment. Only after thorough examination you can get proper recommendations and advice.

Fat Necrosis is due to inadequate blood flow to the fat cells causing them to die. At this point, they may become hard and can cause pain and/or an unsightly appearance. You should consult with your provider and follow their post operative care guide. If you still want to pursue a tummy tuck revision, your pictures indicate you are a good candidate for an ultra high definition tummy tuck. Using high definition VASER liposuction the tummy tuck procedure is a comprehensive removal of superficial and deep layers of fat. I would recommend that you confirm there’s not a fluid buildup in the area of concern.Fat necrosis should not be a common occurrence or a problem with this procedure. Firmness and swelling around the incision is common and usually improves on its own with time.If you do have a fluid collection that it needs to be managed.I suggest following up with your provider.If you’re not happy with the results at six months and this area could be revised fairly easily and most likely with a satisfactory outcome.Revision rates are higher than people believe for most cosmetic surgical procedures. Plastic surgeons should do with revisions on probably 5 to 10% of their cases in order to give the best outcomes.There’s no question that the most talented providers have a lower revision rates but it’s also true that providers don’t criticize their own work have lower revision rates because they don’t want to put in the work or effort to do extra surgery they don’t get paid for.Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
