I broke my nose the 21st of October and had it reset the 30th of October. I don’t like how it looks. My nose looks bigger than before I broke it, and there’s a hump. When will swelling from the resetting of the bones completely go away. And can additional surgery give me my old nose back? The first four photos are after breaking my nose and getting closed fracture reduction. The last one without the eyes covered is before breaking my nose.
Answer: Nasal fracture Nasal fracture closed reduction is the best attempt to improve the shape and function of the nose by pushing and pulling the bones before they set in place. Since not cuts are made little swelling is seen. Some swelling will be possible but resolve with in a week or 2. The final shape many take months to a year often later revealing imperfection hidden by the fullness. Cartledge components are difficult because they will not snap back into place. Those fractures require time for healing/ stiffening and later surgical manipulation. Months after a fracture a boney callus can appear at the fracture site. That also can be rasped down at a later date. Good luck J. Smythe Rich, MD

Answer: Swelling and remodeling after a broken nose For an otherwise uncomplicated nasal fracture, the majority of the swelling should be gone by about six weeks. However, one of the complications of a nasal fracture can be the formation of a bony callus, a thickening of the bones where the fractures were. This can take many months to resolve and can sometimes be permanent. If the size and proportions are still unsatisfactory after a year, surgery can be performed to improve it. This sometimes means a relatively minor rhinoplasty with rasping (filing) of the hump and osteotomies (bone cuts) to narrow the bridge. All the best,--DCPPearson Facial Plastic Surgery®

Answer: Swelling after Nasal Fracture Repair Excellent question and reasonable concern. Your original nasal fracture looks like a depression of the left nasal bone. The repair usually is an elevation of the depressed fragment. The healing can take 1 - 3 months and the swelling the same. Remodeling will occur and I would not have any revisions for at least 6 months.

Answer: When does swelling go away after closed nasal reduction fracture? In general, swelling from a closed reduction of a nasal fracture may persist for a month or so, but not nearly as long as after an open reduction of your nasal fracture. Closed reductions are successful in around 85% of people, and 15% desire further surgery for a straighter appearance. You may not have had a good reduction since it was performed 9 days after your injury - 5 to 7 days is easier to reduce the fracture. Consider consulting with several reputable rhinoplasty specialists so you could see what might be best for you. Dr Joseph

Answer: When does swelling go away after closed nasal reduction fracture? And can I get my old nose back after breaking it? Hello and thank you for your question. Swelling secondary to fracture/closed reduction can last for several weeks to months. If complete closed reduction has been done, you should be able to get your old nose back. You should closely follow up with your surgeon to guide you through the process. Best,Best, Pejman Aflaki, M.D. Johns Hopkins-trained double board-certified plastic surgeon
