first thing you should do is check the ASPS website for a list of doctors in
your area. Then look at online reviews. Check the surgeon's website. Look at
their results. Ask around to see if you have any personal references, these can
be very helpful. Once you have screened the doctor, meet with them. If they are
professional and sincere, educated and experienced, if they listen to your
concerns and develop a plan which fits with your goals, you have found a good
match.The gynecomastia surgery can range from $5000 to $7500.

I am sorry to hear about your son's concerns; he is fortunate to have a concerned mom. I would suggest starting with the American Society of Plastic Surgery and/or the Aesthetic Society of Plastic Surgery to obtain a list of well experienced board-certified plastic surgeons.
Then, I would suggest you visit a few surgeons whose practices concentrate on aesthetic surgery. Ask to SEE lots of examples of their work AND preferably speak/see patients who have had similar procedures done.
Be very careful with your decision-making. You will find, while doing your due diligence, that there are many different “specialties” who will offer their services to you; again, I strongly recommend you concentrate on surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Again, I would also suggest that you do not base your selection of plastic surgeon primarily on costs of surgery; keep in mind that revisionary surgery may be more costly in many ways.  I hope this, and the attached link, helps. Best wishes.

Some of the happiest patients I have treated are young men or teenage boys with gynecomastia.  The improvement in self esteem and confidence can be profound after surgery.  It would be best to have your son consult with two or three board certified plastic surgeons as close to home as possible.  Whatever you do, don't go to a general surgeon or pediatric surgeon for this problem.  I have seen disastrous results from non-plastic surgeons trying to treat gynecomastia.

Hi Golfski4,Thank you for your post. Gynecomastia is a condition that can lead to low self-esteem, embarrassment, and avoidance of certain activities. If it is true gynecomastia, then the only solution will be surgical. And as you rightly stated in your post, insurance providers typically do not cover this procedure.Cost is a real concern and perhaps an obstacle to getting treatment. That being said, it is of utmost importance that your son be evaluated and have surgery by a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in gynecomastia surgery.  Although cost can play a role, it should not be the only deciding factor. This is someone's body and health and well-being. Many offices provide financing to help with the payment.
