FUE Hair Transplant: How long does it take for hair to grow?

Question

Will a person see results as early as two weeks or one month or six months? Will the transplanted hair grow faster, slower, or the same as it was growing wherever it came from?

Results may vary from patient to patient, but we see results in as little as 3-6 months. Hair grows in cycles and becomes thicker and fuller over time. We see optimal results within the first year.Follicular Unit Extractions (FUE) allow each individual follicle, which contains 1-4 hairs, to be extracted from the back of the head (donor site). This is a very precise procedure and should be performed by a a reputable, Board Certified Surgeon with experience. We like to follow our FUE treatments with different light therapy and PRP treatment to stimulate regrowth in order to achieve the best results possible. Best of Luck !

Normally the transplanted hair fall down between the 2nd week and 2nd month. The grow starts from the 3 rd month. 60-70% of the results can be seen in 6 month but for the 100% you should wait up to 12-15 month.

Hi there. Each patients' growth rates differ. Generally at the 2-6 weeks stage most of the follicles shed. At 3 months you get new growth of transplanted follicles. This represents 20% of the final visual result. At 6 months patients get 80% of growth of follicles however they only see 50% of the final aesthetic results as the shaft diameter (thickness) is about half. At 12-24 months the final result is achieved.

At 2 weeks you hair will start to have shed and your scalp will be healing post surgery. At 1 month- most of your hairs will have shed and your donor site will begin to look fully healed. At 6 months you will have the majority of growth but with hairs looking thinner than they usually are. You should expect full growth with thick healthy hair by 12-18 months.

In both FUE and FUT procedures, the transplanted hair will go dormant 2-4 weeks after the procedure and stay dormant until about 3 months post-op.  Occasionally a patient will skip the dormant period and the growth starts immediately after transplant but this is not typical. When the new hair starts to grow, it is very fine in texture.  Sometimes, it is difficult to see, especially if there is native hair in the areas transplanted. The hair grows approximately 1 cm (about ½ inch) in length per month.  We tell our patients to expect to see about 1 1/2 inches of growth at the 6 month post op mark.  Usually, the full extent of the transplanted hair can be seen at 12-14 months post op.  At that point, it will continue grow and blend in with the native hair.

Initially, the transplanted hair stay on the scalp for 2-4 weeks after which they fall off. Then they start coming back after 2-3 months. Around 10% new hair come every month. So, by 6months around 40% of the hair come back, by 9th month around 75% and by 12th month around 80-90%. With either the FUE or FUT, patients are told to expect to see the beginning of hair growth at the 3 month mark.  At about 8-9 months, we will have you come in for a look and compare your progress to your pre operative photos.  We will see you once again at the 15-18 month mark and by this point, you should have reached maximal cosmetic improvement.  All this time, you should be on hair saving non-surgicals such finasteride, minoxidil, low level laser light therapy, PRP, etc.  You may also decide to do another transplantation in order to achieve higher density or treat areas previously untreated.
