Revision rhinoplasty - Prone to keloid. Is this common practice? (Photo)

Open rhinoplasty is a powerful approach that many surgeons prefer to get the outcomes they want, especially when it comes to the nasal tip. I have performed hundreds of these operations and seen many more, and have not seen a patient with a keloid in that location. Keloid formation depends not just on the individual's tendency to from keloid scars, but also the location of the scar itself. Further, scarring can be managed to some extent if followed closely after surgery. You will need to consider the risk of having a revision surgery with the expected benefit of doing it. However, I would view the keloid issue when it comes to the open rhinoplasty incision as a fairly low-risk situation. In your case, I would talk to other surgeons since every surgeon has a different experience and may advise you differently and help you decide on a path to take. A lot of things can also be done through the closed approach as well, but it depends on the surgeon's individual experiences and preferences. As always, make sure that the surgeons you speak with are qualified, board-certified facial plastic surgeons so you can get the best advice possible!

When it comes to keloids, they are like real estate - location, location, location. The most common locations for keloid scarring are on the ears and chest wall. We have not seen any keloid scars at the nasal base. None from us, and none from other surgeons.
